Just How Good Is Jon Lester?
The case for Jon Lester isn’t made nearly enough; somewhere along the line we got stuck classifying Lester as a feel good story rather than an absolutely dominant pitcher. The timing of his playoff success and subsequent no-hitter after coming back from cancer was extraordinary but has almost served to dull his star in the post-media circus . While cancer has undoubtedly defined his life,... [Read more]

Dallas Braden left the Oakland loss in the fourth inning with a sore ankle. Braden had issued an unearned run and three hits in four innings before allowing a couple walks and being pulled. Braden believes that he’ll make his next scheduled start. Braden’s counterpart, Jeremy Guthrie, pitched six innings allowing one earned run for the quality start. Guthrie walked three batters while... [Read more]
Canadian Content: Is Brett Cecil Useful?
Coming off two quality starts after a forgettable two-inning, 8-run, blow-up against Texas, Toronto’s Brett Cecil is starting to resemble a fantasy starter. In last night’s start against the Angels, arguably his best start behind his 1-hit/10K masterpiece against the Indians, Brett Cecil allowed two hits and two walks scattered over 7.1 innings. Cecil’s success has come largely... [Read more]

In an off-day for many clubs, a couple players had great games. Alex Rios homered in the 9th and stole a base in the 2nd in a win over Justin Masterson and the Tribe. Rios is now hitting .309 on the year with a BABIP right where it should be. The strike-outs are down a couple percent and he’s making contact 5% more of the time. Rios’ first strike percentage is down almost 8% and... [Read more]
Canadian Content: The Toronto Blue Jays
Almost everyone predicted ineptitude from the Toronto Blue Jays: Buster Olney, The Sporting News and thousands of die-hard Blue Jays fans that were probably piss-drunk on maple-syrup and Labatt 50 all thought that 2010 would be epically bad. …and then the Toronto Blue Jays strutted into the gym-shower while everyone stared in amazement. The Blue Jays have absolutely nothing to hide and they’re... [Read more]

Ryan Doumit of the Pirates went deep and continues to torture me for giving up on him. Everything about Doumit’s early career pointed towards the loss of catcher eligibility and I cut bait — Needless to say, Doumit’s played 37 games at Catcher in 2010 after 71 and 106 in the previous two years. In 2010, Doumit’s struck down 3 of 37 potential stolen bases. I love where... [Read more]
Who is Kris Medlen
In 2006, the Braves selected Kris Medlen in the 10th round out of Santa Ana College in California. Medlen pitched well through the minors and came to become a starter in 2008. Throughout the minors, Medlen maintained a solid K-per-IP and about 2BB-per-9. While Medlen’s fastball only hits about 91mph on the gun, he throws it with sink and complements it with a change and curveball. Medlen... [Read more]

Excuse me if this is brief, I’ve always had a long-standing mantra when it comes to sports that affected last night: The Playoffs Rule. If there’s a playoff game on in any of the four major sports leagues, it takes precedence. As a Canuck, I probably should be more of a hockey fan but I’m not; it’s baseball and football for me. With that said, I was pretty excited that... [Read more]

Jimmy Rollins hit his second homer of the year, which isn’t exactly a 25-30HR pace from the Phillies shortstop. Rollins has been hitting .342 on the strength of a .355 BABIP but at least the walks have shot up to 19% on the season. All of Rollins’ contact and discipline numbers are the same except for the continued freefall of Zone%. Rollins is currently seeing just over 43% of balls... [Read more]
Jose Contreras — The Reliever
Jose Contreras picked up his second save of the season, closing out a Joe Blanton start, earlier today. Contreras allowed a single hit and struck out a couple of Cubbies to close the deal and is now rocking a 0.70 WHIP and 0.63 ERA. Obviously Contreras isn’t that good but there’s reason to believe that he’s not the same old Jose Contreras: Jose Contreras is now striking out a... [Read more]
